Through the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Darmstadt University of Technology, you will be given a solid insight not only into German politics, history and architecture, but also into German culture, customs and traditions. A unique combination of lectures and excursions as well as a 4-day stay in Germany's capital city of Berlin will help you to gain a better understanding of your host country.
The Cultural Studies Program is divided the into 4 modules:
During morning German students will work with material related to the topic modules and upcoming seminars and excursions. This will prepare students for the afternoon Cultural Studies program which involves participation in the following obligatory seminars and excursions (one module per week):
| Module | Seminar | Excursion |
|---|---|---|
| The German City | History of the German City | Frankfurt |
| German History and Culture | German History , Jewish life and culture in Darmstadt | Rhein River Cruise (Rheinfahrt), Mathildenhöhe |
| Technology | - | Mainz, Opel & ESOC |
| Berlin / Nordhausen | Introduction to Mittelbau Dora | Berlin |
| German Literature |
Each module also requires students to attend one weekly afternoon session, reserved for project work. Each afternoon session lasts for one and a half hours. Students will work in smaller groups on special topics related to the modules (the German instructors will provide detailed information about the project work in class, because the content of the afternoon classes depends on the participants’ level of German.)
The grade for the project work will contribute to the student's final overall grade.
Students have the opportunity to choose which obligatory seminars they wish to attend.
