Application for teachers of German as a Foreign Language

Invitation to apply for participation in the German-held Pre-Conference Workshop “Multilingualism experienced as normal: methods and materials for integrating tasks and exercises based on multilingual didactics in teaching German as a foreign language”

Wednesday, 02 March 2022, and participation in the 32nd AKS Conference (online) from 02 to 04 March 2022

Content of the workshop:

For a long time, multilingualism has been practised normality in DaF courses worldwide, though many times without active planning. Multilingualism refers both to the language learners, who most often have already acquired English as well as different first languages, and to multilingualism within the German-speaking world. However, how can this awareness of multilingualism and its uses be promoted sensibly in the classroom?

This workshop will address various methods of multilingual didactics that are currently empirically investigated and discussed in research. The workshop aims to provide insights into the underlying principles of teaching DaF from a multilingual perspective and the possible teaching scenarios involved. Specific teaching materials and their application will be introduced and discussed. Colleagues from around the world will look at and discuss where and how they can be used and their limitations.

The workshop will focus and reflect on how best to incorporate the principles of multilingual didactics in specific classroom situations and how to develop and improve these materials:

  • Why should and how can I promote awareness of existing multilingualism in the classroom?
  • Which scenarios and materials already exist that I can incorporate in the classroom?
  • How can I add multilingual aspects to my own materials or develop new materials for my specific teaching context?

Information about the AKS Conference:

Topic: “Multilingualism is not a formula, but a practised model”

Multilingualism does not only mean that multiple languages can be used, it also implies that all of us are multilingual and communicate by moving between family language, everyday language, heritage language and/or professional language including many variations thereof. It is the goal of language centres to assist language learners and teachers alike in their endeavour to build and shape their personal multilingual skills and proficiency. During the 32nd conference of the AKS e.V., we will split into various working groups to study the facets of practised multilingualism and how the individual languages interrelate with one another under the overall heading “multilingualism”. The conference programme is rounded off by exciting plenary lectures, book presentations and the awarding of the AKS Prize for “Gute Sprachlehre an Hochschulen – Good Teaching of Languages at Universities”.

The 32nd AKS Conference focussing on multilingualism is being organised by the Language Resource Centre (SPZ) of Technical University of Darmstadt in cooperation with AKS. The conference will take place online from 02 to 04 March 2022. For more information, click here:
